Excitation of Alfvén Waves and Pulsar Radio Emission

چکیده
We analyze mechanisms of the excitation of Alfvén wave in pulsar magnetospheres as a possible source of pulsar radio emission generation. We find that Cherenkov excitation of obliquely propagating Alfvén waves is inefficient, while excitation at the anomalous cyclotron resonance by the particles from the primary beam and from the tail of the bulk distribution function may have a considerable growth rate. The cyclotron instability on Alfvén waves occurs in the kinetic regime still not very closed to the star: r ≥ 50 RNS. We also discuss various mechanisms of conversion of Alfvén waves into escaping radiation. Unfortunately, no decisive conclusion about the effectiveness of such conversion can be made.

Nature of microstructure in pulsar radio emission
We present a model for microstructure in pulsar radio emission. We propose that micropulses result from the alteration of the radio wave generation region by nearly transverse drift waves propagating across the pulsar magnetic field and encircling the bundle of the open magnetic field lines. It is demonstrated that such waves can modify significantly curvature of these dipolar field lines. This...

We demonstrate that nonlinear decay of obliquely propagating Langmuir waves into another Langmuir and Alfvén waves is possible in a one-dimensional, highly relativistic, streaming, pair plasma. Based on this we present a new mechanism of pulsar radio emission that involves development and quasilinear relaxation of two stream instability, induced scattering of generated Langmuir waves by plasma ...
متن کاملOn the Nature of Pulsar Radio Emission
A theory of pulsar radio emission generation, in which the observed waves are produced directly by maser-type plasma instabilities operating at the anomalous cyclotron-Cherenkov resonance ω − k‖v‖ + ωB/ γres = 0 and the Cherenkov-drift resonance ω − k‖v‖ − k⊥ud = 0, is capable of explaining the main observational characteristics of pulsar radio emission. The instabilities are due to the interac...
متن کاملScattering of Low-Frequency Radiation by a Gyrating Electron
The scattering of electromagnetic radiation by the particle gyrating in an external magnetic field is considered. Particular attention is paid to the low-frequency case, when the frequencies of incident radiation are much less than the electron gyrofrequency. The spectral and polarization features of the scattering cross-section are analyzed in detail. It is found that the scattering transfers ...
متن کاملReversals of Radio Emission Direction in Psr B1822 09
The pulse profile of pulsar B1822 09 exhibits a very peculiar kind of mode changing: a “precursor” appearing just in front of the main pulse (MP) exhibits periods of nulling, during which an interpulse (IP) becomes detectable at a rotation phase separated by roughly 180 from the precursor. We propose that this bizarre phenomenon, which requires an information transfer between the two components...
